Leave it to Steve Martin to turn a regular interview on late-night television into a full fledge musical.
Steve Martin joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Monday night to promote his Martin’s musical, Bright Star. However when it came time for the interview, Martin simply did not want to go on. To express his feelings about the whole appearance, Martin sang a song, “I Don’t Want To Do This Show.”
“I used up all my stories when I was in my 40s, but now I’m 52 years old and I don’t want to do this show,” Martin sang (his real age is 70). “I’ve got plenty to promote, but I’ve got no anecdotes. I guess I’ll do the best I can.”
While considering what to do about his dilemma, Martin consulted several employees about what to discuss on the show in the hallway between his dressing room and the stage. Each one told him to talk about a different topic like the Super Bowl or the Oscars, but those got a slap in the face for being “yesterday’s news!” Then, one employee told him to talk about his new musical, which Martin thought was a great idea.
Martin finally graced the audience with his presence where he teamed up with Fallon for the last verse of his song.
“Now we’re doing the show!” Martin and Fallon belted out together.
Check out the musical number here.
