Disney and Steven Spielberg have released the first trailer for the live-action adaptation of The BFG.
The highly anticipated film, based off the classic Roald Dahl novel, follows an orphan girl with a wild imagination.
In the trailer, we are introduced to Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), who is going through the rules of the witching hour. As she recites the rules, her imagination gets the best of her.
“Never get out of bed. Never go near the window. Never look behind the curtain,” she says.
However, her curiosity won and she looked behind that dreaded curtain to see The BFG. The giant (Mark Rylance), then plucks Sophie from her bed in the middle of the night.
The trailer does not offer much insight about what the viewers can expect with the giants and world they live in. Instead, we see the curious and terrified Sophie about to embark on the biggest adventure in her life.
Spielberg was able to collaborate on the screenplay with late writer Melissa Mathison, who had previously worked on E.T.
“It’s a story about friendship, it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends, and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems,” shared Spielberg.
If anyone can live up to the hype of bringing Dahl’s book to the big screen, it’s Spielberg.
“I think it was kind of genius of Roald Dahl to be able to empower the children. It was very, very brave of him to introduce that combination of darkness and light which was so much Disney’s original signature in a lot of their earlier works like in ‘Dumbo,’ ‘Fantasia,’ ‘Snow White’ and ‘Cinderella,’ and being able to do scary, but also be redemptive at the same time and teach a lesson, an enduring lesson, to everyone, it was a wonderful thing for Dahl to have done, and it was one of the things that attracted me to want to direct this Dahl book,” said Spielberg in a statement.
Bill Hader, Rebecca Hall, and Jemaine Clement round out the ensemble cast for this big adventure.
The movie hits theaters on July 1, 2016.
