While some areas of the country are dealing with protest marches and others seeing outbursts of white nationalist incidents, subway riders in New York City are reading the writing on the “Post-it” wall to express how they feel.
After Tuesday’s election results, riders on the New York City subway system began to fill a busy passageway between rail lines with Post-it notes written with messages of reassurance, love, hope, and occasionally how much they love beer.
The messages appeared on Wednesday after Matt Chavez rode an unusually quiet subway to work. According to PIX 11, Chavez grabbed some pens and the sticky sheets of paper and hung a sign that said, “Express yourself.”
Now, thousands of notes line the passageway, many a response to Tuesday’s election results.
It’s no surprise many of the Post-its are anti-Trump messages being New York, long a Democratic stronghold and a microcosm of the “melting pot” mentality that defines America.
Chavez, for his part, wants the space to remain neutral for supporters of both candidates to come forward and let others know how they feel. Chavez said he did not want to reveal who he voted for to help keep the conversation from becoming “divisive.”
“I want this to be a neutral space,” said Chavez. “If you lead off a conversation with someone asking who did you vote for, it already is a divisive way of understanding one another.”
Some of the messages written included, “When they buried us, they did not realize we were seeds,” “We are one,” “We’ve got this,” “It starts with us,” and “Don’t worry, be happy.”
While most of the messages related to the election, some like “I’m in love with a girl who may not feel the same,” and “I love beer,” also were shared.
It’s a small thing, but for many, it may be these smallest of things that bring some comfort.
