Vanity Fair’s 2016 Hollywood Issue Cover Focuses on Female Diversity in Hollywood
The 2016 Vanity Fair Hollywood issue has arrived!
The cover was unveiled via Snapchat on Monday in the magazine’s interactive Discover page. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, the cover features 13 of Hollywood’s fiercest women.
Amid the reigning conversation in Hollywood about diversity, Vanity Fair made a smart move featuring three women of color in the photo – Lupita Nyong’o, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Viola Davis. The cover also features four women over the age of 60 – Jane Fonda, Charlotte Rampling, Helen Mirren and Diane Keaton – saying goodbye to typical Hollywood stereotypes.
Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence join Davis and Fonda to round out the front cover. Rachel Weisz, Brie Larson, Alicia Vikander, and Saoirse Ronan finish off the extra-long fold out feature with Nyong’o, Mbatha-Raw, Rampling, Mirren and Keaton.
The issue focuses on raw, intimate, and honest portrayals of the women in Hollywood.
“As much as we wanted glamour on the cover, because the Hollywood cover is, to us, an occasion, what we thought was interesting is to see them, really, as the canvas that they are to all the various characters they’ve played over the years, and just be very true portraits of them,” Vanity Fair style director Jessica Diehl shared.
Vanity Fair posted the cover photo to Twitter asking: “Could these women be any more impressive?”

The current cover is an immense improvement for Vanity Fair after they were criticized for their 2015 Hollywood cover for only featuring one actor of color and the recent debacle over the all-male late night comedy feature.
The Hollywood Issue includes additional intimate portraits of the women all shot by Leibovitz and tributes to the women and their careers written by James Wolcott.
The Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue will be available on newsstands February 4 and released digitally February 8.
