After much-needed proposed gun regulations were turned down by the Senate and then not voted on by the House due to a week-long break, House Democrats staged a sit-in in order to demand a vote.
Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison was in a meeting when news of the sit-in began to spread, but quickly left to join his colleagues after an unexpected phone call. Ellison’s mom had called to tell him to get his butt to the floor.
Ellison posted a photo of the note his scheduler had handed him after his mom rang.
“Was in a meeting when my scheduler handed me this note. Couldn’t say no. Don’t worry, mom. I’m there,” he wrote on the Facebook post. It’s received over 5,000 shares and hundreds of comments.
“You have my deep appreciation sir, both for your stand and for listening to your mom!” one user wrote.
Unfortunately, television coverage of the sit-in was interrupted when Speaker Paul Ryan turned off cameras in the chamber, but people on the floor have been live tweeting and video taping their experience, which C-Span aired instead.
