The past few weeks have been devastatingly trying for the United States of America, as multiple African-American lives have been taken by members of law enforcement, culminating in the execution of five Dallas police officers by a stand-alone shooter. These consecutive tragedies have resulted in people across the country banding together to protest the violence, none more so than the Black Lives Matter movement.
Brave and passionate individuals have gathered together in many American cities. Images of these protests have already gone viral, but one in particular has been making waves across the internet.
As of this moment, the young woman in the photograph has gone unidentified, but the Black Lives Matter protester is already receiving lofty comparisons to the legendary Tank Man, an image of an unidentified Chinese man who, in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, stood in front of an incoming line of military tanks.
As in the Tank Man image, this young woman, who was taking part in protests held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in response to the death of Alton Sterling, stands boldly and stoically in the face of overwhelming opposition. Her back is straight and her chin is held high as two officers in riot gear move in to arrest her.
Both images showcase the power that one person, one voice, one action, can have and how that action can reverberate throughout history.
