Trailer Released for Baz Luhrmann’s Buzzworthy New Netflix Series
Netflix on Wednesday debuted the first trailer for one of their hotly-anticipated new series, the Baz Luhrmann produced musical drama The Get Down.
The series focuses on a group of teenagers living in the South Bronx at the end of the 1970’s. The series ensemble cast includes Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Skylan Brooks, Jimmy Smits, Tremaine Brown Jr, and Giancarlo Esposito among others. It’s set to focus on the burgeoning and interconnected hip-hop, disco, and punk rock music scenes of New York City at the time. Luhrmann (Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby) is credited as a producer on the series, and directed several episodes including the premiere and finale episodes.
The official synopsis for the series released by Netflix reads:
“The Get Down focuses on 1970s New York — broken down and beaten up, violent, cash strapped — dying. Consigned to rubble, a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them — except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. From Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene; from CBGB to Studio 54 and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, The Get Down is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco — as told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city and the world…forever.”
The Get Down joins the ranks of House of Cards Season 4, Daredevil Season 2, Luke Cage, and Orange is The New Black Season 4 as highly anticipated Netflix original series scheduled to premiere sometime in 2016.
