There is a quote by graphic artist Zero Dean, that says “Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s fine. It’s not their journey to make sense of. It’s yours.”
This is especially true in the case of two good samaritans trying to make a difference in their community and in the world, only to be misunderstood and punished for good deeds misinterpreted.
Tony Moyer and Sam Troyer, brother-in-laws from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, decided to give back to the less fortunate by dumpster-diving for quality food. They had been taking part in this charitable activity for 10 months, locating and donating thousands of dollars worth of food.
Unfortunately, the two men were arrested for dumpster-diving outside of a CVS in October.
Like the quote states, “Not everyone will understand your journey,” and so it happened that Troyer and Moyer were charged with loitering and prowling at night, as well as criminal trespassing.
The dumpster was reportedly always open, and there was no sign signaling “no trespassing” in sight. In an even broader sense, dumpster-diving is not illegal in the state of Pennsylvania.
In the end, the factual numbers support Moyer and Troyer’s crusade to donate food: over $165 billion worth of food is wasted in the United States per year. Shouldn’t that food be put to better use, regardless of which dumpster it’s found in?
If you would like to donate and support their cause, visit their GoFundMe page. As of Tuesday, they raised over $1,000 of their $5,000 goal.
