A local volunteer, “puglife123,” who works part-time at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society recently posted the above image to Imgur. The photo was captioned:
“This woman comes to my local humane society and sits in front of the dogs cage and reads books to the dogs.”
Why does she do this? It turns out the unnamed woman lost her 14-year-old dog recently. So, to return the love and affection she received from her pup, she’s giving back to the dogs who maybe feel nobody loves them. Even when you can’t adopt a dog, there are plenty of ways to give back to our four-legged besties. (What are you still doing here?? Go volunteer already! Actually, there’s more. Keep reading…)
The Animal Rescue League in nearby Berks County is offering a program where kids are invited to come read to pets awaiting adoption.
It’s called the Book Buddies program. Children in Grades 1-8 who are at any reading level can come to the shelter during normal business hours to read to cats in the adoption room. The program serves to help the kids with their reading skills, while simultaneously providing socialization and human interaction for the shelter animals. It’s a win-win for anyone on two legs… or four!
If your local animal shelter offered these programs, would you volunteer? Tell us in the comments below.
