Thanks to a caring police force in Amarillo, Texas, the Scherlan family had the ultimate escorts on their first day of school.
In a quick turn of events, 39-year-old Justin Scherlan died while he was on vacation with his family in New Mexico. Scherlan was a father of four and an 11-year veteran on the police force.
After the accident, the Amarillo police force stepped up to the plate to take Scherlan’s youngest son, Jackson, to school on his first day of Pre-K. The video of them dropping him off was posted online to the Amarillo Independent School District’s Twitter sharing: “After losing his police officer dad, he has an army of stand-ins for this important first.” See the heartwarming moment below.

“He was shocked when we first showed up and saw everything,” Jessica Scherlen shared. “I think Jackson really enjoyed having everyone here. Just to know that he’s still loved by the blue family and that they still care. Emotionally, it’s awesome to see.”
It was equally as rewarding for the officers.
“I’d give it all back just to have Justin here with his son,” said Officer Daniel Smith. “At least we can be here for him and let Jackson know that he always has someone to call on.”
According to KSAT 12, Scherlan’s cause of death is pending until autopsy results are available.
