Apparently, the Internet can do some good!
After a social media campaign gained traction earlier this week, Disney and Lucasfilm treated a terminally ill cancer patient to his last wish with a special screening of an “unfinished” version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
“Daniel just finished watching an unfinished version of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘!!! ” his wife Ashley Fleetwood wrote on Facebook Thursday afternoon. “We would like to thank the awesomely talented [director] JJ Abrams for calling us yesterday to tell us Daniel was getting his wish granted!”
The special screening came after Daniel Fleetwood’s wife and friends began a campaign through social media requesting Disney help Fleetwood see the movie early, fearing he would not live long enough for the December 18 official release date.
Fleetwood suffers from spindle cell sarcoma. The cancer has grown more aggressive in recent months and as of Sept. 1, doctors gave Fleetwood just one to two months to live.
With time running out, Fleetwood’s wife began a #ForceForDaniel hashtag, which went viral within days thanks to the help of some of the film’s biggest stars, including Mark Hamill and John Boyega.
I just read this and am elated for Daniel & his family! Thanks to the powers-that-be for making his dream come true. https://t.co/ImiAdyBxf8

On Thursday, after Fleetwood’s special screening, Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, tweeted again, offering his appreciation to Disney and everyone involved for granting Fleetwood’s final wish.
“I want to thank ALL the amazing people who helped make this happen” Ashley Fleetwood added in her Facebook post. “May the force be with you all #forcefordaniel!!!!”
For the rest of us, we can see the final “finished” version when it hits theaters in December.
