Teacher Gives Former Student the Ultimate Gift With a Kidney Transplant
One teacher from Colorado took a good deed to the next level after learning that a former student of hers was in need.
Henry Howard, who had been taught by Tracy Bye about 20 years ago, had been struggling with kidney disease and needed a kidney transplant. His kidney was operating at about a seven percent capacity and he knew he wouldn’t live long without a transplant.
After hearing this news, Bye wondered what she could do to help and got tested to see if she would be a match for a transplant. Luckily, it was a positive match and the pair rushed in for transplant surgery.
“When I read what his disease was and how his kidney function was so low I was like, ‘I’ll try it.’ I just thought if I’m healthy enough that’s something I can do,” Bye explained.
The surgery was a huge success and Howard has never felt better.
“A week out I got up at 4:30 in the morning and got the bottle out and ran it under water and gave my son a bottle at night for the first time,” Howard shared about his newborn son. “She gave me so much and there’s nothing I can say or do to return the amount of life she has given me.”
As for Bye, she said that she would do it again in a heartbeat.
“It’s a huge thing and it impacts both your lives for the better,” she explained. “Life gives you a lot and if you can give back, that’s the best part of life.”
