‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Shatters Opening Day Box Office Numbers
The biggest film in the galaxy is solidifying its place in movie history on its way to a record-breaking opening weekend.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens set the opening day box office record on Friday with a whopping $120.5 million single day gross, Box Office Mojo reported. That number includes the $57 million the sequel made Thursday night in “preview” shows, which was also a record.
The Force Awakens is the first movie in history to gross more than $100 million in a single day. The previous single day record-holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, grossed $91 million in its first day. Star Wars single day total beat that number by nearly $30 million.
With the opening night and single day records now firmly in the books under the J.J. Abrams-helmed sci-fi fantasy blockbuster, The Force Awakens now sets its sights on the overall opening weekend record.
Analysts wondered if the new Star Wars film would be able to surpass the $208.8 million Universal’s Jurassic World made this past summer. With The Force Awakens Friday total, that number now seems well within reach.
Industry experts are predicting the film will finish its opening weekend somewhere between $225-240 million.
The Force is certainly strong with this one.
