Shannen Doherty Has Reconstructive Surgery Procedure In Latest Step of Cancer Battle
Actress Shannen Doherty has shared her reconstructive surgery plans with fans as part of her ongoing battle with breast cancer.
The 45-year-old actress revealed she was fighting the disease last year, and she has been very public about her battle against cancer on her social media pages.
And on Thursday, the former Charmed star posted a video of herself at her surgeon’s office, undergoing a procedure prior to radiation treatment.
“Getting my expander expanded by my reconstructive surgeon @jayorringermd and the lovely Ana Marie,” she wrote on the social media site. “I consider myself very lucky and very blessed to have this man as my doctor. The last couple of days have been busy gearing up for radiation.”
“This is Dr. Jay Orringer, who is my reconstructive surgeon and my friend,” she explained. “What he’s doing is, I have an expander in and because I’m starting radiation soon, he has to overexpand me and make this sort of placeholder larger, if you will, because radiation shrinks it.”
“Radiation acts like a shrink-wrap effect around the expander,” Dr. Orringer adds. “Whether you lose 20 per cent volume or 30 per cent, it’s difficult to know.”
The actress recently opened up about the personal changes she has experienced as a cancer victim, during a recent interview with Chelsea Handler, revealing, “I think what’s beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down and builds you, and tears you down and builds you. It remakes you so many different times.
“The person I thought I was supposed to be or was going to be or who I thought I was six months ago is now somebody completely different.”
