Virginia McLaurin never thought she would live to see an African-American president in the White House. So, when the 106-year-old got the opportunity to meet President Obama and the First Lady, she could not contain her excitement.
On Sunday, the White House Facebook page shared a video of McLaurin as she was welcomed to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. As Obama walked into the room, McLaurin jumped with joy. The Obamas were shocked to find out the centenarian was 106 years old.
“I thought I would never live to get in the White House. I am so happy … a black president … a black wife … and I am here to celebrate black history,” McLaurin shared with them.
When President Obama asked McLaurin the secret to still dancing at 106, she said, “just keep moving!”
The White House visit was prompted by McLaurin after she started a campaign on social media in 2014 to meet the president and First Lady. She posted a video on YouTube explaining she didn’t think she would live to see a colored president.
“I didn’t think I’d ever live to see a colored president. I am so happy. I pray for you every day of my life.”
Along with the YouTube video, McLaurin created a White House petition and a Facebook page, which helped her to reach her goal.
“I wanna be like you when I grow up,” Mrs. Obama told McLaurin.
“You can,” McLaurin happily replied.
