For one Salvation Army kettle in Erie, Pennsylvania, the spirit of giving during the holiday season was taken to the next level.
This Salvation Army kettle received a $1,000 donation from a winning lottery scratch-off card. The donation was received last Tuesday at a local Walmart and was completely anonymous.
“The Christmas season often brings out the best in people,” Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko told Inside Edition. “It’s heartwarming to hear stories such as this one, and I applaud this anonymous winner for turning their good fortune into an act of charity that will benefit the community.”
This isn’t the first time a lottery scratch-off card has been donated into a Salvation Army kettle, however the size of the donation is pretty rare.
“We’ve received donations of winning instant tickets in the past, but they’re usually in an amount of $10 or $20 – never something of this size,” Leslie Walter of the Salvation Army told Inside Edition. “We are very grateful for this generous donation, which will help us to serve people and families in need.”
During the holiday season last year, a couple from Minnesota made a sizable donation of $500,000. The donors, who remain anonymous, previously struggled during the holiday season and hoped their donation would help those who needed a bit of assistance during the winter. The $500.000 set the record for a single donation for the Salvation Army in Minneapolis.
