Rescue dogs often have a long road to recovery ahead of them, especially for ones who were neglected an abused. It takes the dog time to not only heal but to learn to trust humans again. They were highly sensitive and intuitive creatures. For one rescue dog with mange, what started out as a heartbreaking story had an incredible heartwarming end.
When Joey Wagner came upon an abused 3-month-old puppy in a home, he knew time was of the essence to get the dog some help. Wagner runs a nonprofit organization in Nova Scotia, Canada, so he was familiar with finding dogs in horrible conditions. Wagner could see the puppy had a severe case of mange and his front leg was injured. Wagner got the pup to an animal hospital as soon as possible.
Lucky for the rescue dog, the vets at the hospital were quick to begin its recovery process. The pup, later named Mojo, began to get the treatment to fix his hurt paw and heal his mange. Visitors began making requests to adopt Mojo, but for a puppy in this condition, not just anybody could take him into their home. Mojo was going to need special care. Throw in the fact that Mojo was a pit bull, which have terrible negative connotations associated with their breed, adoption wasn’t looking good.
But Wagner heard about Mojo’s troubles getting adopted and knew he needed to step in. Wagner returned to the animal hospital and had the knowledge to treat him and provide a suitable home for Mojo. The pup hadn’t seen Wagner for some time, but it’s clear based on the video of their reunion that Mojo had not forgotten his savior.
Wagner and Mojo are still together today, four years later. Mojo’s fur never fully returned, but he’s living his best life with Wagner and his brothers.
