Traditionally bachelor parties are for being wild and crazy – spending your last hurrah of freedom with your best friends before you commit the rest of your life to someone. Sometimes they could include decadent guests like strippers, but for groom-to-be Mitchel Craddock a very unusual surprise guest crashed his five-day bachelor party getaway at a woodsy cabin in Tennessee.
The guys were cooking up bacon on the first morning of their four-wheeling trip with the cabin door open, when a flea-bitten mutt appeared. They coaxed her to come into the cabin, but the hungry and thirsty pooch only accepted food and water outside, wolfing it down.
“She was very friendly but very skittish,” Craddock told Mlive news.
“I thought maybe she had been booted out of a house before,” he observed. Because of how well she behaved Craddock assumed she must have an owner. The guys went about their business riding their rigs around for hours only to return to the dog who made herself at home under one of their trucks.
They named her Annie, after Little Orphan Annie.
After a few days the guys decided to welcome their new found party guest and discovered she was producing milk. Annie would also bark in alarm when a vehicle approached the wood line along a road behind the cabin. Suspiscious, Craddock and his friends further investigated and found seven puppies in a wide underground den. Craddock surmised they were newborns, about five or six weeks old. Despite their mother’s malnourishment, her pups were very robust.
Craddock recalled, “Once we got the puppies out of the hole, we knew we couldn’t just leave them, so we started figuring out where they would go.” His solution was each of his buddies would go home with a puppy parting gift.
“Thanks for coming to my bachelor party. Here’s a puppy,” Craddock laughed.
Already the owner of a chocolate Labrador retriever, Craddock thought twice about taking one of the puppies home to his new abode, but his bride-to-be Kristen insisted on keeping the yellow lab, who they named Brimmie.
As for Annie, Craddock’s grandparents took her and one of the puppies too.
Now all the puppies are happy and healthy living with their adopted families.
“The puppies all have been to the vet, and the dirty, wormy, flea-infested little creatures are bathed, fat and sassy now,” Craddock joked.
Here are Rosie, Knox, Gunner, Bear and Finn with their bachelor party poppas taken October 26 in Vicksburg, Michigan.
