Presumed Dead, German Shepherd Found Alive After 5 Weeks at Sea

This is one lucky pup.

A 1-year-old German Shepherd named Luna, who was “presumed dead” for over a month, has now miraculously been found alive.

Five weeks ago, on the morning of February 10, Luna’s owner, Nick Hayworth, a fisherman, reported Luna missing. Approximately 2 miles off of San Clemente Island, the dog reportedly fell off a fishing boat into the Pacific Ocean.

Deemed “a powerful swimmer” by Hayworth, he insisted she would likely head to shore. Members of the U.S. Navy who responded to the call searched for the dog, but to no avail. After a week of scouring the island, it was concluded Luna was likely lost at sea and presumed dead.

However, this Tuesday Morning, to great astonishment the lucky Luna was discovered to be alive and well. Navy staff had arrived on the island for work and were greeted by the jovial pup, who was said to be “wagging her tail” according to a public affairs officer for the U.S. Navy’s Naval Base Coronado.

“Keep in mind, there are no domesticated animals on the island, so it was a stunning sight,” said DeMunnik.

The staff immediately attempted to get in touch with Hayworth to tell him the amazing news who was said to be “ecstatic –  jumping up and down” from DeMunnik.

Hayworth’s best friend will be picking up the German Shepherd today to reunite the pair.

So how did Luna survive?

A wildlife biologist for the San Diego Zoo determined Luna was “perfectly healthy other than being a little undernourished…It looks like she’d been surviving off of mice for the past few weeks,” DeMunnik said.

It looks like this is one dog who may have nine lives.
