On Tuesday, Police found an alligator in Lakeland, Florida, swimming around with a human body still in its mouth.
According to an ABC news affiliate, the body was that of a male, but it has not been identified.
In a video, Sgt. Gary Gross, a Lakeland police spokesman, said it doesn’t look like the incident happened recently.
“It appears – prematurely, a little early – that maybe this body was in the lake more than a day from looking at the body,” he said. “It doesn’t appear to have just occurred.”
The gator reportedly let go of the body when police arrived, and the body has since been retrieved.
The gator is still located in Lake Hunter, but will likely be captured soon for further evaluation.
The news comes just two weeks after researchers discovered deadly, man-eating Nile crocodiles have found their way to the Sunshine State. Nile crocodiles are known to be larger and more aggressive than their American counterparts.
