Meet Emma Morano, the oldest person currently alive in the world.
The 117-year-old has lived quite the life over the last three centuries including surviving several wars, a loss of a child, and an abusive relationship. Morano, who hails from the Piedmont region of Italy, was born on Nov. 29, 1899 and was the oldest of eight children.
Morano officially became the oldest person in the world after America Susannah Mushatt Jones died this past May.
Morano’s family was known for their longevity. According to BBC, her mother lived to be 91 and several of her sisters lived to be over 100 years old.
The Italian native also tributes her old age to her diet. After being diagnosed with anemia after World War I, she began to eat three eggs, two being raw, every single day.
Morano also managed to keep her life upbeat and positive by kicking out her abusive husband after her son died in 1938. Although the couple didn’t officially get divorced, Morano never found a reason to get married again.
“I didn’t want to be dominated by anyone,” she said.
As a tribute to Morano and her long life, a special musical performance has been written and will be performed in her hometown of Verbania, Italy. The show will represent “the feminine courage which rebelled against domestic violence.”
