In a time where most newsworthy stories of police interacting with the community end with tragedy, it feels good to hear one like this, the story of how the Yukon, Oklahoma Police Department made a mother’s day.
Terra Hubbard, the mother of 3-year-old Brayden, a young boy with autism, was preparing her son’s birthday party. Then she began to receive word of her invitees canceling at the last minute. Before long, it seemed as though no one was going to attend Brayden’s party and it would have to be canceled, leaving the two alone on his birthday.
One knock on Hubbard’s door changed all that.
“They come up to my door, and you always think that’s bad,” Hubbard said, according to AOL Lifestyle.
Members of the Yukon Police Department were at the door. They had received an anonymous tip about Brayden’s party, and the caller asked if they could attend. One of Brayden’s favorite toys is a small Police Cruiser.
A dozen officers were able to come to the party, and before long, Brayden was enjoying himself in the driver’s seat of a police cruiser, an experience that moved both his mother and the officers.
“We’ll never forget that birthday, and we hope he doesn’t either and his family won’t either,” said Lt. Zach Roberson.
Doing a good deed will never go out of style and will always be appreciated, especially in times like these.
