When Barack Obama came into office in 2009, he had a swing set and other playground equipment installed on the grounds of the White House for his daughters Malia and Sasha, then 10 and 7 years old respectively. Now that swing set has been donated to a local Washington D.C. area shelter, the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Program.
According to several outlets, including the New York Daily News, the set was offered to the incoming Trump administration for use by the President-elect’s 10-year-old son Barron. Both the Obama White House and a Trump staffer confirmed that the offer had been turned down.
Jobs Have Priority describes the shelter as such:
“Naylor Road Program (NRP) is a 28-apartment family shelter located in Southeast DC. Most of the families at NRP are headed by young African-American females. The average family has two to three young children and many have at least one family member with a mental, developmental or physical disability.”
The site continues, “We know the significant impact parental employment has on family stability and the increased positive outcomes it generates for the children. This makes our work with families essential if we are to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.”
The Obamas are scheduled to attend a Martin Luther King Day ceremony at the facility. More information about Jobs Have Priority can be found on their website.
