While negative attitude toward law enforcement snowballs, an NYPD cop does his job right, valiantly diving into water to pull out a drowning man.
Officer Rajub Bhowmik saw a 49-year-old man struggling off South Cover Marina near Battery Place at around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to authorities. Bhowmik leapt into the Hudson River and saved his life.
The man was trying to commit suicide but was safely removed and taken to Bellevue Hospital to be evaluated psychiatrically.
Officer Ismael Mercedes, 28, alerted the NYPD Harbor Unit after fast-thinking Bhowmik, also 28, jumped into the river.
Bhowmik, apparently injured in the act, was taken to NYU Downtown Hospital but has been released.
The officers are assigned to NYPD’s Critical Respond Command, defined as an anti-terror unit, and while Mercedes has had seven years in the force, Bhowmik has had four.
