Single mom Yvette Vasquez has become a social media sensation after her Facebook post blew up to 17.5K shares and counting.
Vasquez donned a fake mustache for her son’s annual school event “Donuts for Dads” at Sue Crouch Intermediate School in Fort Worth, Texas so he wouldn’t feel left out.
She wrote, “I wasn’t about to let him miss out….. I know seeing other dads with there (sic) kids isn’t easy for mine but its life, at least I can do whatever it takes to put a smile on that face, so here it goes….. and please don’t hate I know I’m a woman an so do my sons lol (sic).”
Excited friends shared the news after the post went up September 1 and it spread like wildfire.
Vasquez herself couldn’t believe the outpouring of love she received from the media saying, “Ok, so I just got off the phone with Fox 4 and was asked permission to use my photos…. I’m actually really great full (sic) for all the positive comments me and my kids have cried several times since the post because of all the love!!! So thank u and God bless.”
Her story reached television news programs such as CNN and morning chat shows such as Morning Express with Robin Meade, the Today show, and she even had interviews with Telemundo and NBC 5 in Ft. Worth. Vasquez shared a post that it is “officially all over the world” with a shout-out to all the single parents that “it ain’t easy.”
Vasquez took cues from her son Elijah about what it would take to complete her masculine look, giving her his plaid shirt and the mustache.
She told CNN, “He was telling me what I should wear. And when it wasn’t manly enough, he let me know. He kept saying, ‘No, you still look like a girl.’”
Vasquez might have become a poster mom for single mothers, but fathers had somewhat of a different reaction to her gender bending stash. “I did feel the energy of a few men who weren’t as comfortable with it though.”
Dressing like a dad made Vasquez bond with her son who often misses out on school activities that involve fathers. On her post she wrote the hashtag #wegettingthemdonuts, but ironically when it was time to eat the donuts for the event Vasquez was too nervous. So she did what any mother would do – she gave it to her son.
