Telling somebody else what they should or should not wear is never OK. It’s especially not OK if that person is a toddler. However, that’s what happened to a mother and her 3-year-old son.
In a viral post to Facebook group Love What Matters, the mother explains how her boy loves wearing tutus.
“If asked, he will say the tutus make him feel beautiful and brave. If asked, he will say there are no rules about what boys can wear or what girls can wear,” she wrote.
The mom and her son were enjoying a blissful day at the park when a man approached them asking why the boy was wearing a tutu.
“‘I’m just curious,’ the man said. ‘Why do you keep doing this to your son?’ He wasn’t curious. He didn’t want answers. He wanted to make sure we both knew that what my son was doing – what I was ALLOWING (sic) him to do – was wrong,” she wrote.
The man continued harassing the family exclaiming that the woman was a bad mother and that it was “child abuse” to let her son wear a tutu. He even took pictures of them and said that “now everyone will know.”
Obviously, she proceeded to call the police.
“They came, they took their report, they complimented the skirt,” she wrote. “Still, my son does not feel safe today. He wants to know: ‘Is the man coming back? The bad man? Is he going to shout more unkind things about my skirt? Is he going to take more pictures?'”
The concerned mom wrote candidly that she wasn’t sure whether or not the man would come back or not, but she refuses to be intimidated.
“I will not be made to feel vulnerable or afraid,” wrote the mother. “I will not let angry strangers tell my son what he can or cannot wear. The world may not love my son for who he is, but I do. I was put on this earth to make sure he knows it.”
Her post has since garnered over 37,000 likes as of press time and and over 2,000 comments showing support for the family.
“You let that cute, strong, brave little boy wear whatever he wants too,” one person wrote.
“Good on you, mom. You and your boy keep doing what you’re doing,” another commented.
The mom finished her post with a loving motto her family lives by.
“The motto is this:
“We are loving.
“We are kind.
“We are determined and persistent.
“We are beautiful and brave.
“We know who we are. Angry strangers will not change who we are. The world will not change who we are—we will change the world.”
Hopefully the message catches on to people who would like to dictate other people’s fashion choices.
