Moonpie, a miniature cow, is having a bit of an identity crisis. Namely, she seems to think that she’s a dog.
Earlier this year, Moonpie was supposed to be part of a livestock auction where thousands of animals are purchased by those who wish to use them for meat. However, the cow was spared by a unnamed friend of Janice Wolf, the founder of the Rocky Ridge Refuge Animal Sanctuary in Arkansas.
The calf was moved to the sanctuary after being rescued from the auction. However, her small stature, the fact that she’s still milk-dependent, and rainy weather meant that she couldn’t be outside with the other cows.
“I don’t have a lot of room here, and it was cold and rainy, and that wasn’t good for a little calf,” Wolf told the Dodo. “All my heated buildings were occupied with other critters, so that’s how she ended up in my bedroom. I figured it would just be for a few days, but the weather just kept going whacky, so she’s been in there for the last six weeks.”
Moonpie wasn’t alone however, as she was sharing Wolf’s room with the woman’s rescue dogs. Moonpie and the dogs bonded almost immediately.
“She accepts them as her buddies,” Wolf told The Dodo. “Babies like that — they don’t know a whole lot about what it’s supposed to be, so they kind of just accept things. They clean her face, the way her mother would have. They love to do that… They were all thrilled to see her.”
Wolf further elaborated on the bond between the calf and the dogs.
“My dogs have a lot of experience with various critters I rescue or otherwise end up with! A calf is just another friend to love,” Wolf told Bored Panda.
“I was a bit surprised really! I have had many of my interspecies relationships featured in various media, but didn’t expect a calf to garner much attention,”Janice Wolf wrote to Your Daily Dish. “I am used to many species sharing my house and my dogs befriend many different types of animals, so I guess I forget not everyone has shared their home with a calf, or zebra, or capybaras!”
