Christina Torino-Benton was in the middle of her wedding to Danny Benton when she heard their baby daughter crying. Torino-Benton told the Daily Mail that she couldn’t just sit by and let her daughter Gemma cry, so, she decided to breastfeed her right then and there.
“When she started crying I couldn’t focus on my wedding,” she said. Torino-Benton, who doesn’t pump or bottle feed, knew that breastfeeding was the only way to calm her down.
“At the church it was like 40 degrees (Celsius), Gemma was hot, she missed her nap, and was overall really crabby,” she added. “[But] once I got her in my arms, I was able to calm down and focus. A lot of people think that my feeding her mid ceremony was a bother, but actually it was nice having her up there with us. She is always a joy to have around.”
During the unconventional moment, the wedding photographer snapped a picture of Torino-Benton breastfeeding and she has since shared it with the Facebook page Breastfeeding Mama Talk with the caption: “That moment when you’re getting married and your baby gets hungry ;) feeling SO proud of myself! Fighting that good fight!”
It’s received over 8,000 likes and been shared hundreds of times (as of press time). Torino-Benton said she never expected the photo to go viral but is glad it did.
“I think sharing photos like this is important. Things like this do happen. I’m not the first and I won’t be the last and hopefully people will be more accepting and understanding,” she told the Daily Mail.
