Loving Cat Comes to the Rescue of Puppies After Her Litter of Kittens Dies
This one is an oldie but a goodie, as they say.
Back on April 17, 1993, a cat named Miss Kitty gave birth to kittens in Seneca, South Carolina. What should have been a blissful time quickly took a turn for the worse, though, as the litter died shortly thereafter.
Miss Kitty’s owners, Missy and Ryan Grant, also had a dog named Smoochy. During this same period, Smoochy gave birth to a litter of pups. Unlike Miss Kitty, though, Smoochy didn’t have much interest in taking care of her little ones.
Miss Kitty came to the rescue, though. When the Grants realized one day that five of their puppies were missing, they were confounded. As it turns out, they were in the care of Miss Kitty. She had picked up the puppies with her mouth, one by one, and taken them to her side of the yard.
“I heard the puppies start screaming, and it screamed and screamed, and I finally got up to go see what it was,” Linda Blackwell, the Grants’ neighbor, told PAX TV program It’s a Miracle in 2001. “And that’s when I came to the door and I saw Miss Kitty going across the yard with one of the little puppies in her mouth. And Miss Kitty went back and got another one and picked it up, and she kept bringing them across the yard until she had all of them over there.”
Missy Grant was mystified. She couldn’t believe it! She fully embraced the situation, though, moving Miss Kitty and the puppies to a safer and more comfortable location. (They had previously been holed up under a car.)
“We see cats adopting other kittens and we see dogs adopting other puppies, but very seldom do you see one species nursing off a different species,” Dr. Andrew Holland, the Grants’ veterinarian, told It’s a Miracle.
“Miss Kitty is a perfect mother,” Missy Grant said gleefully.
