Last week, a 10-year-old photo of U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky meeting her future teammate and fellow Olympic superstar went viral.
This morning the duo recreated the photo for Today, this time with the 31-year-old Phelps getting Ledecky’s autograph.
The duo had plenty to smile about in the new snapshot, as they’re leaving Rio with a combined eleven total medals, 9 of which are gold. Phelps added five to his record-shattering collection of 23 golds, while Ledecky took home the top prize in four events.
Phelps, who announced that he’s retiring from Olympic competition, spoke about Ledecky and the future of the U.S. swim team on Today:
“We are in great shape, not only with Katie but with the team that we have now. Katie’s doing her thing and she’s breaking records every time she gets in the pool. It’s been an honor for me to be a part of the team with her and some of the younger guys that we have coming up in the sport that are going to take over.”
Ledecky in turn spoke about Phelps on the same program, saying, “A lot of the young swimmers on the team, we all looked up to him when we were 6 years old.”
Realizing how old that made Phelps sound, she jokingly followed with, “I didn’t mean it like that!” she joked. “I started watching him when I was 6 years old when I was first starting to get in the sport and to be on the team with him has been such an honor.”
