Looks like hens are replacing dogs as man’s new best friend. Well, at least for this 24-year-old Frenchmen who is traveling the world with his pet hen.
Guirec Soudee and his hen Monique have an unusual bond. The duo met when the hen was about four or five months old.
“I knew she was the one straight away,” Soudee shared with BBC. “She was only about four or five months old then, and had never left the Canary Islands. I didn’t speak any Spanish and she didn’t speak any French, but we got along.”

When Soudee planned for his trip around the world, he knew he wanted to bring a pet with him.
“I thought about a cat, but decided it would be too much effort to look after it,” he explained. “The hen was an ideal choice. It doesn’t need that much looking after and I’m able to get eggs at sea. People told me it wouldn’t work, that the hen would be too stressed and wouldn’t lay eggs.”

Soudee was skeptical if the hen would travel well, however he was quickly proved wrong.
“At the beginning, I was very worried,” he shared. “There would be huge waves and she might stumble, it would look for a second like she might go overboard, but she would always regain her footing. She’s very brave.”
The hen lays about six eggs per week on board the 39-foot ship.

The quirky pair will now make the trek to the Arctic, down the Bering Strait towards Nome in Alaska. The duo started their journey in the Canary Islands and continued onto the Caribbean and Greenland.

And next?
“We’re not sure yet,” Soudee says. “We haven’t talked about it yet, but we will.”
