Matthew Perry Says He ‘Can’t Remember’ 3 Years of Filming ‘Friends’ Due to Substance Abuse
Matthew Perry has opened up about his rough past with substance abuse.
During an interview with Britain’s BBC Radio 2 on Friday, Perry candidly discussed his addiction when filming Friends and explained that he still can’t recall much of what was filmed for a few years because of it.
When the actor was asked about his least favorite episode on Friends, “Perry admitted that his substance abuse erased much of his memory of his time on set,” shared Entertainment Weekly.
“Oh my goodness,” he said. “I think the answer is I don’t remember three years of it. So none of those … somewhere between season 3 and 6.”
Perry confessed, “a little bit of the time, I was a little out of it, yeah.”
The Friends actor has since opened up in length about his struggle with prescription medication and alcohol abuse. In an interview with People in 2013, Perry explained “I had a big problem with pills and alcohol, and I couldn’t stop.”
“I was a hopelessly narcissistic guy, and I only thought about myself, and then that just shifted,” he shared with People, “and when that happened, I got some true happiness and comfort in my life.”
Perry has since been in rehab twice and even opened his own sober-living facility, the Perry House.
Most recently, Perry is preparing and promoting his upcoming play The End of Longing, which premieres in February in London. Due to the role, Perry was not about to join the rest of the Friends cast during the taping of NBC’s Must See TV: A Tribute to James Burrows. However, Perry will make an appearance during the special when he introduces his costars for the program.
NBC’s Must See TV: A Tribute to James Burrows airs February 21 on NBC.
