After completing the new Jason Bourne movie, Matt Damon is back at work with his new movie, The Great Wall. Directed by legendary Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (he of the Hero and House of Flying Daggers fame) and with a screenplay partially developed by World War Z author Max Brooks, at first glance of the trailer, The Great Wall seems like a historical epic set centuries ago.
But in fact, The Great Wall is actually a monster movie. Check out the awesome trailer below:
So why is what will be the most expensive Chinese film of all time being led by an American actor and delivered as a Hollywood blockbuster?
Yimou tells Entertainment Weekly, “First and foremost, this is an English-language film, and a Hollywood blockbuster. It was already very clear in the script phase. This is a Hollywood monster movie and needs to be made in that style. I don’t want to change that approach, and there’s no need to do that. What I really want is to bring Chinese color and cultural background to the worldwide audience through a film language that they are familiar with.”
The Great Wall stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Jing Tian, and Pop Chinese icon Luhan, and will be in theaters worldwide February 17, 2017.
