George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot the unarmed Florida teen, Trayvon Martin, is set to auction off the gun he used to kill Martin.
According to multiple reports, GunBroker.com user GZ1776, is “honored and humbled to announce the sale of an American Firearm Icon (sic). The firearm for sale is the firearm that was used to defend my life and end the brutal attack from Trayvon Martin on 2/26/2012. The gun is a Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm. It has recently been returned to me by the Department of Justice.”
“This is a piece of American History (sic),” added Zimmerman in the description.
Fox 35 in Orlando confirmed with Zimmerman that he was in fact the seller.
“I’m a free American. I can do what I want with my possessions,” he told Fox 35.
Zimmerman was accused and then acquitted of killing Martin in 2012 under Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law.
The auction began Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Bidding starts at $5,000.
In the item description, Zimmerman claims “many have expressed interest in owning and displaying the firearm including The Smithsonian Museum.”
However, the museum refuted that claim quickly Thursday morning, tweeting:
We have never expressed interest in collecting George Zimmerman’s firearm, and have no plans to ever collect or display it in any museums
— Smithsonian (@smithsonian) May 12, 2016
Zimmerman’s claim that his firearm is a piece of “American History” when there are over 30,000 gun deaths per year in America is also highly questionable.
