LG Display is unveiling a new prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show and from the looks of it they are trying to reinvent the newspaper.
The company is showcasing its newest technology, an 18-inch display that you can bend and roll up similar to a piece of paper. LG showed signs of this technology last year, but kept all the hard evidence behind closed doors. The new rollable screen builds off of the “OLED work focusing on bendable, rollable, and curving displays,” shared The Verge. LG is now confident enough to share the design with the world.
While this type of concept display has been seen from Samsung and Sharp in the past, LG has indicated a different turning point for the technology. LG hopes the bendable technology will be featured in smartphones, tablets, and TVs in the future.
In the next few days of the CES, LG will showcase their newest TV as well. The 55-inch TV is “‘paper thin’ and houses its key electronic components in a separate body,” shared Android Authority. LG also has plans to take this technology on the road. In the Auto Zone section at CES, LG will show off a 25-inch curved screen installed within a car.
LG invested a substantial amount of money into this project towards the end of 2015. The company built new plants in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, Korea for a total of $8.71 billion. LG also spent about $1 billion to build the sixth generation flexible OLED display production line.
LG will be unveiling more on this project during the next few months. Hopefully some of the more successful and interesting ideas will actually make the jump from prototype to reality.
