Let Your Garden Garnish That Cocktail

A resurgence in mixology over the past several years has led many to create ever-fancier cocktails in their homes, whether at (adult) birthday parties, BBQ’s, or family reunions. But a true mixologist knows that while the combination of liquors, juices, sodas, what have you, is important, the proper garnish in a cocktail can make all the difference and add depth to the drink’s palette.
And it turns out, your garden is a great place where you can find and grow your own garnishes. Some of these are obvious, but others are must-try’s at your next garden party.
Frozen Berries
Instead of adding ice cubes that can water down your drink, keep it chilled and add some flavor with frozen berries. This one is your preference, but everything from red and blackberries, to strawberries, to pineapple cubes can do the drink.
Herbal Stir Sticks
How about this one for genius? Don’t just pull the leaves and toss the stems of your favorite herbs. Use them as a stir stick for your favorite cocktail.
Cucumber Strips
Gin & Tonics are most often accompanied with a slice of cucumber, but this little tweak adds a great twist to the boring disk affixed to the glass. Cut thin strips of cucumber, wave it through a stir stick, and dip into your drink to release its fresh flavor.
Infused Salt
This is one where you can really experiment with your favorite flavors. Using a food processor or a simple mortar and pestle, you can grind and mix a variety of herbs or flavors into coarse salt for the rim of a tasty margarita.
Herbed Ice Cubes
Here’s another idea that allows you to add flavor and keep your drink on ice. Take your favorite herbs and put them into water and just pop them right in the freezer. They’ll disperse flavor as they melt into your drink.
