In news that should come as a shock to no one whose been paying attention to awards season, Director Damien Chazelle’s La La Land dominated the Academy Awards nominations, which were released this morning. The modern day musical film scored 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Chazelle, acting nods for both stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, Best Original Score, and two separate entries in the Best Song category. The film’s haul ties All About Eve (1950) and Titanic (1997) for most nominations ever.
Congratulations to #LALALAND on its 14 Academy Award nominations including BEST PICTURE – Tying the record for most #OscarNoms! #Oscars pic.twitter.com/JsoFuGfffI

Beyond La La Land’s historic showing, there were several other notable aspects of the nominations. A year after the #OscarsSoWhite movement led to a debate on minority representation and changes in the Academy’s nomination system, all four major acting categories and the Best Director category feature at least one African American nominee. In addition, three of the films nominated for Best Picture —, Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Fences — feature predominantly African American casts.
As usual for the Oscars, there were some snubs that are sure to raise a few eyebrows. Academy favorites Martin Scorsese and Amy Adams were left out in the cold for Silence and Arrival respectively. Also, Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory was snubbed in the Best Animated Feature category, a rarity for the studio.
