When they were both young children, Adrian and Brooke respectively served as ring bearer and flower girl at a North Carolina wedding, walking down the aisle together as part of the bridal party. Near a decade and a half later they walked down the exact same aisle, only this time they became husband and wife.
In fact, the couple’s history goes back even further than the wedding, as they attended the same grade school together. Though at the time, they saw each other quite differently.
Brooke Franklin told ABC, “I had a crush on him from the start. He absolutely could not stand me. He said ‘I got on his nerves.’ I’d tried to play with him at school and at church and he just didn’t want much to do with me at all.”
Luckily, Adrian saw the error of his ways as the two got older. By high school, he was finally ready to ask her out.
“We would draw with our finger on each other’s backs and guess what the other person was writing,” he said. “I wrote ‘Will you be my girlfriend’ and she guessed it, but didn’t answer me. I said ‘Well Brooke, are you going to say anything?’ and she said ‘Well you didn’t write a question mark.'”
Adrian later took that high school story and incorporated it into his wedding proposal.
“Before our wedding day I had a sign made that said ‘Will you marry me’ but I cut the question mark out,” Adrian added. “I asked her to marry me and I said, ‘Here’s your question mark.'”
The two tied the knot on September 19 in the same church where they had served years earlier. Both claim they initially didn’t recall the story, until one of the guests at their wedding gave them a very special present. That guest, the bride from the original wedding, presented them with a photo of the couple as children walking down the aisle.
“We forgot that we were in the wedding together and she brought the photos to us,” Brooke said. “She just thought that was the neatest thing. She was really excited.”
The Franklins’ story gained exposure after family members shared the snapshot on Facebook, taking the couple aback.
“We are all in shock as to all the attention that this is getting. There was a picture that my mom posted on Facebook and we’re glad that it’s good news going out and not bad,” Adrian Franklin said.
The couple now proudly displays the childhood snap along with their wedding photos, looking forward to the day they’ll be able to share the story with their children.
