Doctors at a Brooklyn hospital are rallying around a colleague who is unable to return to the U.S. as a result of Donald Trump’s controversial ‘Muslim ban.’
Dr. Kamal Fadlalla, 33, visited his family in Sudan before Trump banned people entering the U.S from the Northern African nation and six other Muslim-majority countries. The executive order went into effect right before Fadlalla, an internal medicine resident at Brooklyn’s Interfaith Medical Center, boarded a plane back to the U.S.
Fadlalla now must wait in Sudan instead of being in Brooklyn to help his patients.
“I don’t know for how long I’m going to stay here,” Fadlalla told the Los Angeles Times. “I don’t know what I’m going to do. My visa is valid for three months. I’m really stuck. I have my house there, my utilities, my work, my patients, my colleagues. It was my life for the past 20 months. And I’m stuck here.”
The staff members at Interfaith Medical Center were shocked to learn that their colleague won’t be returning anytime soon.
“He’s highly regarded by his colleagues and beloved by his patients and is an excellent physician,” LaRay Brown, CEO of Interfaith Medical Center, told New York television station WPIX. “Dr. Fadlalla is not someone we need protection from, he’s bringing an extremely important benefit to Americans, he’s serving people in Brooklyn who need healthcare.”
On Tuesday, interns and residents at the hospital showed their support for Fadlalla by holding up signs that read “Bring Kamal Back” and “Immigrant Doctors Matter.”
