When two coworkers needed a cost-effective alternative to cool their workplace during periods of “intense heat,” they created what could become the new standard in air conditioning units.
Meet Geizeer (pronounced geyser), the eco-friendly, compact air-conditioning unit that can cool your home for as little as one cent per day. So how does Geizeer work?
The whole system is made of two pieces of wood, which is a natural, supremely efficient thermal insulator. Inside the wood is a rechargeable battery, a micro USB and a brushless fan. And then there’s the ice pack.
The cooling element comes from a freezer pack that can be placed in any freezer. Once the pack is frozen, the owner slips the pack into the bottom of the cube and places the top half on. The power turns on only when the two halves are connected and the “blue dots” are aligned. The device will turn off if disconnected, making it safer for children and pets. Watch the full video demonstration below.
Geizeer’s design allows for 360 degrees of cooling and should be sufficient to cool a room of about 12 square meters, the creators report. The insulating wood allows the ice pack to release cool air for about four hours.
The inventors launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the project, initially setting a goal of $34,191, but backers seem quite taken with the idea as it’s now raised over $250,000. The Geizeer has been featured in numerous publications, including TechWire, The Weather Channel, and Business Insider.
To learn more about the Geizeer, head on over to the Kickstarter page. You can place your order for the Geizeer now, but due to high demand, the device is currently on back order.
