Imagine waking up from a coma and having the ability to speak in a language that you never learned in the first place. Such was the case of 16-year-old Reuben Nsemoh, a teenager from Georgia.
Nsemoh is a goalkeeper for his soccer team at Brookwood High School. During a recent game, Nsemoh was kicked in the head diving for a loose ball. Nsemoh ended up with a concussion, his third such injury, and stopped breathing. After being rushed to the hospital, he went into a coma and thankfully awoke from it three days later, but stunning everyone, he was only able to speak fluent Spanish, a language he had not known prior to his injury.
His native language of English was lost to Nsemoh, and he was only able to communicate in Spanish, a language he now says he believes he picked up from his brother and his friends.
“My friends would always talk to me in Spanish and would teach me,” he said to WSB Radio.
Slowly, his Spanish fluency has faded away and his English has returned with his ongoing recovery.
This stunning development has not hindered Nsemoh’s eagerness to return to the soccer field once he is fully recovered, though his coach has stated he will only allow him back on if he wears a helmet.
“It’s my passion. It’s the one thing I want to do for my career,” Nsemoh said.
Have you ever heard of anybody waking from a coma with a strange new ability?
