‘Ghostbusters,’ ‘Top Gun,’ and ‘Shawshank’ Among Films Added to National Film Registry
The Library of Congress is opening their doors to the Hollywood classics. Ghostbusters, Top Gun, and The Shawshank Redemption are among the 25 films that will be added to the National Film Registry this year.
Each year the Library of Congress and the National Film Preservation Board come together to “choose 25 films to be preserved due to their cultural, historic, or aesthetic significance,” shared Entertainment Weekly.
Films are only eligible for selection if they are more than 10 years old. While the Librarian has the final say about which films make the cut, the public can nominate titles they think should be considered.
“Selecting a film for the National Film Registry recognizes its importance to cinema and America’s cultural and artistic history,” Librarian of Congress David Mao said in a release. “The registry is an invaluable way to advance public awareness of the richness, creativity and variety of our nation’s film heritage.”
Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman shared how honored he felt to be included in the National Film Registry.
“Making Ghostbusters was one of the great joys of my life,” Reitman said in a statement. “It’s an honor to know that a movie that begins with a ghost in a library now has a spot on the shelves of the Library of Congress. It’s humbling to be part of a collection of extraordinary films that I have loved all my life.”
The 2015 list includes some rather old films as well. The Sneeze, produced in 1894 by Thomas Edison’s team of inventors, is among the oldest surviving copyrighted motion picture to be included. Other older films to be inducted are A Fool There Was (1915) and The Mark of Zorro (1920).
This year’s list brings the total of films in the National Film Registry to 675. You can see the full list of this year’s selection at the Library of Congress website.
