Shade comes in all shapes and sizes. As much as we might desire natural shade on those hot summer days, most of the time we do not like what comes with it: leaves, debris, pollen, and hanging bugs.
So, we create it ourselves, and there’s way more than one way to do so. Don’t think you have to resort to the same old, tired awning, or build a screened-in porch.
Here are 10 different ways to create shade outdoors!
Large Vibrant Umbrella
Umbrellas don’t have to be tacky. They can be modern and uplifting like the one seen above. Having the pole not in the center, makes it feel more roomy and contemporary.
Sail Shade
A sail shade is perfect for making a patio feel like a living room. It provides cover from the sun and also privacy from nosy neighbors.
DIY Canopy
There’s no better way to create shade than by hanging a pool towel or a sheet over some chairs and calling it a day. The kids will love it and it’s easy to take down or move around.
Covered Deck
This patio gets good protection from its arched canopy. If you’re tired of usual awnings or umbrellas, this shape gives you some unique architecture and serves as a focal point in your backyard.
Overlapping Sails
Is one sail shade just too boring? Why not try two? The two different colors add dimension and depth. Position the sails so their a tad off kilter.
Cabana
A large cabana can make any patio or deck super cozy. Choose neutral colors and then dress it up with cushions or pillows for a relaxing look.
Yellow Canopy
If your backyard is kind of gray and dreary, simple choose a brightly-colored canopy, such as yellow or orange, and hang it over the space. It’s like instant sunshine!
Decorate a Pergola
Pergolas are always pretty. You can make one into a great place for shade by attaching some fabric underneath or over the top of it.
Plant Cover
This plant is called the hardy banana. If you need some more greenery as well as shade, consider this plant. It can grow up to two feet per week and eventually reach 12 to 18 feet tall.
Estate Awning
There’s a reason retractable awnings are so popular: They’re very easy to use. They also look great when they match their surroundings.
