Baywatch is back.
Paramount pictures dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated cinematic reboot of the 1990s television series yesterday. Judging by the trailer, the film seems to take many of its cues from the successful 21 Jump Street film series. Like that reboot, it seems that Baywatch will try and blend a serious plot involving a dead body around numerous jokes poking fun at iconic, yet derided elements of the series — including objectification of women, overwrought rescue sequences, and of course slow-motion running.
The trailer even suggests the film may drift into meta territory with a discussion of how the titular lifeguard unit needs to “restore the Baywatch brand.”
The film’s official synopsis is light on details, simply reading;
“Lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) and a brash new recruit (Zac Efron) uncover a criminal plot that threatens the future of the bay.”
Baywatch, directed by Seth Gordon, stars Johnson, Efron, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, and Hannibal Buress. In addition, original series cast members David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson are confirmed to appear. The film is scheduled for release on May 26, 2017.
