We are no strangers to the spectacular and often unbelievable things dogs are capable of doing. Time and time again they have truly lived up to the persona of “man’s best friend.” Hero, a service dog trained to detect blood sugar increases and decreases in diabetics, is another one of these incredible animals.
Hero lives with her parents and little Sadie, a 4-year-old girl with type-one diabetes and Down Syndrome. Hero’s job is to use his training to monitor Sadie’s blood sugar levels, and to alert her parents when he senses a decrease or increase. Hero – and other service dogs – has been specially trained to detect any changes from up to a mile or two. Anything beyond that would be miraculous, but that is just what Hero achieved one day.
Sadie was in school five miles away from their home, where Hero was. Sadie’s mother noticed the dog, who was normally quiet and calm, suddenly became agitated and began to whine. Just to play it safe, she called up the school. Within minutes of her call, Sadie’s blood sugar levels dropped from 122 to 82, a dangerous decline that could result in a diabetic coma, or even death. Somehow, Hero was able to sense this even from such a great distance, a fact that bewildered Sadie’s parents, her teachers, and even Hero’s trainer.

“There’s another piece of it I call ‘God only knows,'” said Hero’s trainer, trying to theorize how the service dog could do this amazing feat.
Indeed, we can only imagine what kind of connection Hero has to Sadie, but what we can do is appreciate this unbelievable story of a dog saving a life.
