Gay Patron Overhears Homophobic Conversation About Family’s Nephew, Responds by Buying Their Dinner
A little act of kindness goes a long way.
After overhearing a post-election conversation about homophobic topics in a local restaurant, Natalie Woods decided to rise above and be the bigger person.
According to the Huffington Post, Woods was dining at Snuffer’s Restaurant and Bar when she overheard a family discussing their “liberal” nephew who had come out as gay. The family members continued with their discussion sharing that “they would ‘pray’ for Jesus to ‘cure’ their nephew.”
Inspired by Michelle Obama’s quote, “When they go low, we go high,” Woods decided to take matters into her own hands and “actually act like the Jesus I grew up learning about,” shared the Huffington Post.
Woods then paid for the family’s meal and left a hand-written note saying: “Happy holidays from the very gay, very liberal table sitting next to you. Jesus made me this way.” She then added, “P.S. Be accepting of your family.”
Before she left the restaurant, Woods took a photo of the receipt and note to share it on Facebook. It quickly got the attention of the internet gaining over 1,000 likes (at time of press).
“It’s time myself and the people of this country defend each other, defend minorities, defend people of all races and religions,” she said. “Sometimes it starts with small acts of love, sometimes it’s protesting in the streets, voting, lobbying, or running for a local office.”
Woods hopes that her message of kindness will inspire others and hopefully “continue the message of love.”
