In case you missed it over the weekend, Universal Pictures released the first full length trailer for their upcoming reboot of The Mummy franchise.
The thrilling trailer begins on a military plane where a group of soldiers, including star Tom Cruise, are transporting an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus. The plane is attacked by a large flock of possessed birds, who cause it to crash land in a fiery action set-piece during which Cruise’s character, Nick Morton, is able to save the life of one of his comrades with a parachute stunt that would look right at home in the actor’s Mission Impossible franchise.
Next we see Morton, he’s zipped up dead in a body bag, however he inexplicably wakes up with ease. He has good timing though, as the female mummy from the sarcophagus is awake and wreaking havoc through modern London.
Universal is hoping the film is successful in kickstarting a Marvel-style shared universe starring the classic Universal Monster properties that include the titular monster, as well as Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man. To that end, the trailer features a small appearance from Russell Crowe as Doctor Jekyll (or possibly his alter ego Mr. Hyde) whose onboard as a lynchpin of the potential franchise.
The Mummy, starring Cruise, Crowe, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance and directed by Alex Kurtzman, is scheduled for release on June 9, 2017. Universal previously saw success with Mummy films from the 1930s-1950s, as well as the late 90s/2000s series featuring Brenden Frasier and later Dwayne Johnson.
