Cool Birdhouses to Spice Up Your Backyard
If you want a diverse backyard, there’s no better way than trying to attract birds. Their cheerful songs make having that second cup of coffee on your porch all the more pleasant.
Depending on the type of birdhouse and bird food you have, different birds will come, but the most important thing to remember is that they need to feel safe in their surroundings (which also means it may be time to keep Mittens the tabby cat indoors).
Sturdy birdhouses, however, don’t have to be boring. Below we give DIY options so you can make the birdhouse of your dreams.
Junk Birdhouse
Lacking materials? Don’t feel like cutting your own wood? Then this birdhouse is for you. Just take a bunch of, well, junk and adorn an unfinished birdhouse. It’s perfect for the shabby-chic backyard. Check out the tutorial here.
Mosaic Birdhouse
This one is great if you need to add a little pop of color to your backyard. You can buy any old, plain birdhouse and use broken tiles or dishes and paint to liven it up. The result is quite stunning. See how to do it here.
Log Cabin Birdhouse
This rustic birdhouse will make the coziest of homes for your flighty friend. You can cut your own design or take a pre-made house and add sticks. Read about it here.
Fabric and Mod Podge Birdhouse
Who ever thought to use fabric for birdhouses? This woman did, and we will never look back. If you don’t have a knack for painting, consider using fabric and mod podge on your birdhouses instead.
House Number Birdhouse
No tutorial for this one, but it is a really cute idea if your house doesn’t have it’s address numbers anywhere on the exterior. Just buy some numbers in a font you like and nail them on.
Birdhouse Fence
Even though it’s not actually a functioning birdhouse, it still looks really cool and will brighten up your backyard. You can see how to do it here.
Hanging Birdfeeders
OK, so, these aren’t birdhouses, but they are really cool! You could also probably turn them into houses if you wanted to. See how to make some hanging feeders here.
Book Birdhouse
This one is awesome for book lovers! The man who made it builds lots of things with old books. You may need to weather-proof it so it can last outside, but it would also make a wonderful indoor birdhouse.
