Comedian John Oliver Breaks Down True Manufacturing Costs of Donald Trump’s Wall and It’s Not Good
It can be argued that Donald Trump’s (née Drumpf, as John Oliver has pointed out) plan to build a giant wall across the U.S.-Mexican border is his most ridiculous yet.
Just about everyone who’s against Trump thinks so, including John Oliver. On his HBO show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, on Sunday, the host decided to take Trump’s claims and consider them for a moment as if they were possible. Oliver explored Trump’s plan with incredible detail, going over everything from finances and materials, to location, as well as claims that it will help protect against large amounts of immigration and drugs. The latter point, Oliver debunks in characteristic thorough fashion.
“While yes, individual undocumented individuals have committed horrible crimes, so – obviously – have American citizens. And in fact, researchers consistently find that immigrants are less, not more, crime prone than their native-born counterparts. The crime rates amongst immigrants once here are relatively tiny digits, which is something Donald Trump should frankly understand given that he has ten of them attached to his minuscule wrists,” Oliver exclaimed, alluding to strange critique that Trump’s hands are unnaturally small.
Oliver also stated that the wall would actually cost billions of dollars more than Trump’s $10 billion estimate – a number that Trump continues to increase during his own stump speeches – not to mention that the wall would cut through peoples’ properties, preserved wildlife areas, and Native American burial grounds.
Even though Trump says he will get Mexico to pay for the wall, Oliver shows clips of Mexican officials saying, “I’m not gonna (sic) pay for that f***ing wall.”
Oliver, however, seems to have a better solution.
Instead of spending billions constructing a giant wall, Oliver suggests Trump spend the money making sure every American has an electric waffle iron, so we all have access to waffles, of course.
“Look, I know what you’re thinking. ‘John, this [waffle iron plan] is a stupid idea.’ But is it? Is it really? Yes, obviously, it is. But is it significantly stupider than Donald Trump’s wall? Because this waffle iron plan will cost less; do nearly as much to keep out immigrants and drugs; it won’t harm our relationship with our third-largest trading partner; if it is racist, it’s only toward Belgians; and unlike Donald Trump’s wall, this makes f**king waffles.”
It’s probably safe to say most Americans would appreciate the waffle maker way more than the wall. Watch Oliver’s full segment below.
