The daughter of a brave New York Police Department cop who died on 9/11 is following in her father’s footsteps and joining the force to help protect and serve the city that she loves.
Brittney Roy was just 7 years old in September 2001. Her father, Sgt. Timothy Roy, was working in the NYPD’s surface transit enforcement division at the time, according to ABC News. On Sept. 11, Roy was working in downtown Brooklyn when two planes were flown into the World Trade Center towers. Roy raced to the scene in southern Manhattan and was last seen near the base of the South Tower before it collapsed. Sadly, it was not until March when authorities found Roy’s body.
Brittney Roy, now 22, said that she always dreamed of following in her father’s footsteps and becoming a police officer. Last week, the Long Island, New York native was sworn in along with 473 other recruits at the police academy in Queens. The NYPD’s Twitter page paid special tribute to the Roy family, sharing Brittney Roy’s story, where the tweet quickly went viral. It garnered nearly 30,000 retweets and likes.
“Meet Brittney Roy, daughter of NYPD Sgt. Timothy Roy who was killed on 9/11,” the NYPD wrote in the tweet. “Today, Brittney joined the NYPD. Let’s say thank you & congrats.”
